A funicular railway is means by which to traverse a steep cliff. In this case the cliff from Babbacombe Downs to Oddicombe beach. It operates much like a cable car but on rails, as passengers sit in four charming wheeled cars that are hauled up and down the incline by four cables.
It was originally built in 1923 and operates to this day. It runs Easter to September from 9:30am to 5pm. A bell is rung at the bottom station 30 minutes before closing.
