Hallsands

Ruined cottage in Hallsands village in South Devon near Kingsbridge.

The village was finally claimed by the sea in 1917 after a series of storms. It is beleived the destruction was caused as the villages natural protection, the shingle beach, had disappeared due to dredging by the Admiralty further up the coast.

The compenastion offered to the villagers was at best insulting and the controversy carried on for many years.
