East Devon

East Devon remains largely unspoilt by insensitive developments due to large parts of its territory being divided between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. East Devon AONB and the Blackdown Hills AONB. These areas are protected against intrusive exploitation and thus the scenic beauty of these districts is preserved intact. The two AONB share a unique geology with craggy ridges, leafy river valleys and a long grassy plateau. The East Devon AONB has a number of charming towns and villages such as Lyme Regis (in Dorset), Exmouth, Sidmouth and Seaton, whilst the Blackdown Hills has no major towns within its boundaries only picturesque villages and hamlets.

The Coastal boundary of the East Devon AONB runs from Exmouth to Lyme Regis. These two towns are also Gateways to the Jurassic Coast. This is a stretch of coast line that runs for 95 miles from East Devon to Dorset and is the first area of Britain to be designated a World Heritage Site so that is rocks that encompass 185 million years of geological history and span the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods can be preserved for future generations.

The East Devon coastal towns of Exmouth, Sidmouth, Beer, Seaton and Lyme Regis all make excellent base camps from which to explore both the Jurassic Coast's geological treasure trove and the natural splendours of East Devon.
