Paignton Pier

The Great British tradition of the seaside pier.

The 780ft (236m) Paignton Pier was built in 1879. It was commissioned by Arthur Hyde Denby a local barrister who saw a pier as a centre point of the development of a the resort.

Originally there was a grand pavillion at the seaward end but this was destroyed by fire in 1919.

Now-a-days the pier is home to a variety of amusements and rides
